Trattoria with a real new modern/mafia styled feel
The Alfred Guide Tip
try and get a seat downstairs.
La grand carbonara is worth a try.
54-56 Great Eastern St, Hackney, London EC2A 3QR
Gloria’s you can't miss it, with a facade as grand as its name. As you approach the entrance of the restaurant you are greeted by an array of plants of all shapes and sizes artistically placed along the footprint which sets it apart on the busy Great Eastern Street in Shoreditch. The interior decoration gives you a sense of classic but grande Italy with the marble topped bar, and range of ornaments used as wall decor. The restaurant is spread into different areas, taking on slightly different themes, with the downstairs dining area being the signature piece.
At the bottom of the stairs a large draping deep red curtains and neon sign signify the entrance of the almost like you are about to set foot upon a stage.
After entry past the curtains you are transported from the more relaxed atmosphere to a hip, mafia-esque styled set with seating set around the kitchen which almost mimics the stage.
The music and lighting give it a slightly more modern vibe compared to the upstairs dining area.
The food is classic but full of flavour and classically made cocktails.
I had La gran carbonara and an aperol spritz which echoed these sentiments.
