A warehouse styled Thai restaurant with a homely menu and a city buzz.
43A Commercial St, London E1 6BD
Just between spitalfields market and Aldgate East is the green and leafy treasure that is Som Saa. Front of house is styled like a city warehouse with the painted exposed brick arches and weather wooden floors. Centre stage is the long bar which acts as a partition for the main dining area. Walking through into the main dining area you quickly get thrust into the canteen styled vibe. The low lighting and array of dark wood table sets spread out across the restaurant floor. We had the lunch taster menu which was fantastic. The chicken skewer had a deep flavour from the turmeric and coconut mix, Ajaad relish rounded the richness from the skewer marinade. For mains we had the neua parlow which was an incredible sauce that was smooth, soft and balanced, the cheek was crispy but was so tender it would melt in your mouth. To accompany this bold dish was some rice and daily som tam which was fresh and palate cleansing. The highlight of the menu was the dessert, a salted palm sugar ice cream with tumeric grilled banana. Luscious and smooth salted palm sugar was a perfect accompaniment to round out the char on the banana. Overall Som Saa was a delight with its inventive and ever changing menu. It will be a firm favourite of the Alfred guide when in the Shoreditch area.
The Alfred Guide Tip
Great for a lunch or dinner, the lunch taster menu is great value for money.
